Located on the most southern point of Indiana, Mt Vernon was one of Indiana’s early river towns established in 1816. Mcfadin's Bluff  was the original name of the settlement that continues to depend on the Ohio River to play a central role in the community. Southwind Maritime Center allows access to all modes of transportation including state highway and rail, as well as the Ohio River. Mount Vernon’s river port is in the center of one of the richest grain production areas in the world,  handling about 4 million tons of grain, grain products, coal fertilizer, cement and minerals annually and one of the globe's largest fertilizer markets.
