Originally called Sprinklesburg, Newburgh’s roots date back to 1803, making it one of the oldest communities in Southwestern Indiana. On the banks of the Ohio, this quaint little town quickly became the largest riverport between Cincinnati and New Orleans and boasts quite a colorful history, including being the first town north of the Mason-Dixon Line to be captured by the Confederate forces on July 18, 1862. During the economic boom of 1960’s and 70’s, Newburgh grew as a bedroom community as families moved into new housing developments. Today, Newburgh is locally known for its charming little shops and restaurants along its riverfront, its top-rated schools and family-friendly atmosphere.
